Those of you that truly know Jay . . . would you expect anything less???
First Lutheran Church of Bismarck, where Jay serves as the youth pastor, had their Vacation Bible School last week and the theme was Heroes Headquarters. Of course my hubby was up to his usual antics – good antics – to get the kids excited about Jesus & God.
The first night he was a slave driver and the kids had to clean mirrors, sort silverware, pick up trash, and fold laundry; the second night he was a shepherd and the younger kids had to herd the balloon sheep with staffs while the older kids had sheep relays with staffs; the third night he was Andrew a disciple of Jesus, the one who found the boy with the five loaves of bread and two fish – so he fed the kids raw fish and bread; the fourth night he was a Roman Centurion soldier (hence the costume) and the kids took turns being leaders and marched around the church and played similar to Simon Says; and the fifth night he was Paul and they hid from the Romans, but spent most of the time talking.
He had a great time with the kids and the kids seemed to have enjoyed him reenacting the lessons. In addition to his hands on lessons, he coordinated time and experiences with local heroes. The fire department came with a big rescue truck and showed the kids the jaws of life. Then the North Dakota National Guard came another night and brought a big red, white, and blue military Hummer, and the kids got climb in the gun turret.
I think he gets as excited, if not more, about an exciting VBS than the kids do!!
