The kids and I are having a hard time connecting with homeschoolers in our area. There is a support group, but it isn’t quite what we are use to. We were actively involved in our homeschool co-op which gave the kids the same class-room experience and socialization that children get by going to a public or private school. The kids took classes, had parties, and get togethers at friends’ houses. Unfortunately, there is not a co-op in our area and we are having a hard time connecting with families so the kids can make meaningful and lasting friendships.
On top of that, the area isn’t homeschool friendly. What do I mean? Well, we are use to things being offered to homeschoolers – for example, the zoo, the art museum, the YMCA, the libraries, the parks and other public entities offered enrichment classes/programs or things specifically for homeschoolers. Unfortunately, we can not find those same outlets or opportunities here. We are very bored being cooped up with nothing to do!! At least with summer approaching, the kids can participate in activities that are available because all the school age kids need things to do over summer since schools will be out. But what will we do when fall rolls around???
I kept trying to figure out why this area doesn’t offer a co-op or other opportunities for homeschoolers. Well, I think I found the answer - Estimated homeschoolers in 2008-2009 . . .
. . . in the whole state of North Dakota there was 2,941
. . . in the whole state of Ohio there was 51,697
That’s a huge difference!!! That explains a lot!!!!
